The Local Governing Body
Governors are volunteers who give their time and expertise freely to support the school.
A Governor’s term of office is four years. The Local Governing Body appoints all Governors, except staff and Parent Governors, where elections are held. Appointments are made according to the skills needed by the governing body.
The Local Governing Body is comprised of 9 Governors, 2 Parent Governors, 2 Staff Governors, including the Headteacher and 5 Co-opted Governors.
Current Governor Profiles
Nicola’s diverse career has been in education for the last 20 years, and includes full-time teaching and senior leadership roles in both primary and secondary schools within Surrey and London, most recently as an Interim Headteacher and Leadership Consultant. Nicola is also a qualified counselor, having worked and volunteered for Child Line and a local hospice. In her spare time she now works as Ambulance Crew for the British Red Cross. Nicola is keen to use her experience for the benefit of the children and families at Stoughton Infants.
Rob Edwards joined as a governor in October 2017. Rob is an Actuary, working in the Retirement sector of the Life Insurance industry, specializing in Pricing and Product Development. Rob also holds a PhD and has always had a passion for learning. Rob has two sons, one of which has recently joined Reception at Stoughton. In his spare time Rob enjoys playing basketball in the Surrey Men's league and spending time with his family.
Jo Hurley has worked at Stoughton for three years and has been Literacy Coordinator for two. She is originally from Canada and has taught in Korea and America as well. This is her first year as a governor.
Mary's career has been in primary education and teacher training with the last 21 years as a headteacher in an infant and nursery school in Kingston. Mary wanted to continue her interest in education and use her knowledge to help a local school and that is why she became a governor when she retired. She is thoroughly enjoying her connection with Stoughton Infant School and is pleased to be a small part of such a lovely school.
Robin joined as a governor in November 2020. He is a Chartered Chemist who worked in the construction industry in the Middle and Far East as well as Europe. He obtained an MBA whilst working in Spain. During his time in Dubai he was involved with the setting up of Jumeirah English Speaking School. Since returning to the UK, he set up a practical training scheme for civil engineering undergraduates. He passionately believes that good education for young children shapes their future lives.
Sophie Lewis joined Stoughton infant school as a parent governor in July 2018.
Sophie is a primary school teacher of 14 years. She has previously worked at Stoughton running the nuture group for pupils with special educational needs. Sophie has 3 young children and is currently taking a career break to care for them.
Rachel joined Stoughton Infant School as a parent governor in September 2018. Her background is in manufacturing, specialising in continuous improvement, but is currently a Research and Development Manager for a company that designs and makes instruments for medical research. Rachel has a son at Stoughton Infant School in Year 1.
Ms Linda Blake-James
Linda joined Stoughton Infant School as a co-opted Governor in 2020. Her background is Law, having worked as a QC, specialising in Criminal, Family, Children and Care Work. Linda was appointed as Legal Chairman of the Mental Health Review Tribunal in 2000, went on to become a Circuit Judge in 2009 before retiring in 2017
Julie Cavanaugh – Clerk to Governors
Julie worked at Stoughton Infant School as a Teaching Assistant and now is our Clerk to the Governors. Julie’s role is to offer support and guidance, where required, to the Governors. Julie also ensures that meetings are accurately managed and minuted.
